3 Ways Coconut Oil Can Rock Your Skincare Routine
Did you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? Yup, it’s a living breathing organ, and it’s our first line of defense against the environment, temperature, and sensation, plus it plays a major role in detoxing our bodies. What a job, right? With all that our skin does, it’s up to us to take care of it and ensure that it has the proper fuel to do its job. Just like any other organ, you don’t want to fill your skin with nasty chemicals...but let’s face it, who has the cash for fancy, expensive beauty products? With all that us working girls have to take care of, your skincare regimen shouldn’t stress you out. Here are my top 3 ways to simplify and naturify (that’s a word, right? Let’s make it one) the way you care for your skin and they all have to do with coconut oil.
Coconut oil: Ah, coconut oil, the miracle in a jar. There are countless articles and videos out there proclaiming how this seemingly simple product can revolutionize your kitchen, your cleaning routine, and, yes, your skincare routine. I have a big tub of coconut oil in my bathroom cabinet and I use it for everything. Not only do I use it for everything, but this stuff is crazy cost-effective. I bought a big 28-oz tub about 5 months ago for $30 and after using it nearly every night, I’m barely ¾ of the way through. How much money do you spend on cleansers, creams, serums, and other beauty products a month? I thought so. With one jar, you’ll be doing your body and your wallet a huuuge favor.
1. I wash my face with coconut oil.
I know, I thought it sounded crazy too when I first heard of washing your face with oil because it seems so counterproductive, but hear me out. Cleansing your face with oil is actually one of the most effective ways to rid your skin of dirt, everyday toxins, and excess oil. When we scrub our faces with harsh cleansers and microbeads (don’t even get me started on how toxic those little monsters are for your skin and the environment), we strip our faces of all oil, causing our skin to overproduce oil, which leads to breakouts. Oil cleansing re-balances your skin’s natural oils and leaves it baby-soft and smooth. Plus, coconut oil is antimicrobial, full of antioxidents, and has a ton of anti-aging properties. All you have to do is put a little coconut oil in your palm, rub your hands together to melt the oil, apply it to your face like a traditional cleanser, and rinse it off either using a warm washcloth or by splashing your face with water, and that’s it!
I’ve been doing this for four years and my skin has never looked or felt better.
2. I moisturize with coconut oil.
After I’ve washed my face, I moisturize with just enough coconut oil to lightly coat my face. I wipe some of the excess oil off my forehead because #bangs, but that’s it! I’ve tried natural brands of day/night creams but nothing works quite as well as coconut oil, I promise. Plus, who has time to keep running to Target when you run out of that teensy bottle? Not me. You’ve got better things to do.
3. I also use coconut oil as a makeup remover.
Waterproof mascara can be so tricky to take off, for example, but coconut oil has your back, Simply rub a little bit on your lashes and rub off with either a warm washcloth or a tissue if you’re in a pinch. Yup, that’s it. I’m also a huge fan of using coconut oil to make makeup remover wipes (perfect to keep in your bathroom and in your gym bag!) - my favorite tutorial can be found here.
When buying coconut oil, make sure you’re buying extra-virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil so you’re putting the purest form of this miracle on your skin. Other than that, with one tub and $30, you’re good to go for about 6 months. It’s a win-win.
