The Final Five And Fans: A Golden Relationship
Entering the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the US Women’s Gymnastics Team, also known as The Final Five, were billed to take the competition by a landslide; and that’s exactly what they did. At the commencement of the Games, it was clear that each member of the team offered something only she could to ultimately lead Team USA to take home a victory. After winning the gold metal in the team final, by a staggering eight point spread, the Final Five left their mark in Olympic history. But beyond the gold metals and record-breaking scores, the 2016 Olympic Women’s Gymnastic team have captured the hearts of Americans nation-wide for other reasons as well. Although Olympians, Biles, Douglas, Hernandez, Kocian, and Raisman all prove to be relatable to fans everywhere, gymnasts and non-gymnasts alike, exemplifying what it means to represent Team USA. Here are just a few of the reasons the Final Five have built such a strong relationship with their fans:
The Final Five’s shining personalities.
Giving oneself fully to a sport that is filled with uncertainty takes a special kind of person. Each member of the Final Five Olympic team exudes a sense of selflessness and humbleness that shows them to be completely surrendered to their sport. In doing so, each girl on the team understands all that is necessary to succeed in what they do. For the Final Five it’s never about winning a metal for themselves; it’s about bringing light to all of the gymnasts on Team USA and the hard work done to get to where they are now. The pure love for gymnastics the Final Five has shines through their personalities on and off of the floor. Because of this, it's clear to see that none of the gymnasts are involved in the sport for fame or metals; they are involved for the fire gymnastics lights inside of them and the spark it ignites in others.
Fans are able to relate to what gymnasts experience inside and outside the gym.
To some it might seem like endless hours in a gym vying for a dream that may not come true; for others it is a dream that will not take “no” for an answer. Gymnasts spend their lives working towards a common foal of being the best that they can be, always. With the nature of the sport comes practicing not until you do something right, but rather practicing until you can never do it wrong. Being an athlete and training toward a seemingly impossible goal, it’s more important than anything to have others who understand what you are going through and why you need to continue on a straight path towards success. Being able to relate to the Final Five means relating to the love each team member has for her sport as well as the mental and emotional means after the gym closes its doors for the night. The Final Five define why it's important to remember that all things in life are about the journey, not the destination.
They show it is possible to achieve your dreams.
As young gymnasts everywhere dream of one day making it to the Olympic Games, they also dream of being just like the gymnasts who already made it there. The Final Five illustrate clearly what it takes to be an Olympian as well as what it means to hold that title. As young girls everywhere watch the Olympics in hopes of one day being there themselves, the members of the Final Five were able to demonstrate that it is possible to make your dreams come true and succeed in what you are passionate about.
Seeing someone else achieve his or her dream makes it easy for us to believe that we can achieve our own. Each member of the Final Five had a unique path that she took to get to the Olympic arena, and each of those different paths show the many different ways of achieving a dream and succeeding in your life calling.
