Inside The Inspiring Power Of Flowers With Flower Alchemist Katie Hess

I first encountered Katie Hess at her Flowerlounge event in New York City in April 2017. She has the most positive, peaceful, and compassionate energy about her. You can tell how much gratitude and mindfulness she carries in her every movement. As someone new to flower alchemy at the time, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but when I heard Katie speak, I realized that she is like an artist sharing her craft and inspiring other people to live more lovingly and compassionate. All I could think was: how do I get some of that energy?

Katie Hess is a flower alchemist, entrepreneur, and founder of LOTUSWEI, a growing company based out of Phoenix devoted to creating a worldwide positive ripple effect through flowers and flower elixirs. Her love of nature since childhood has inspired her craft and has empowered her to build a business so that she can share the transformative effects of flower alchemy with the rest of the world. Read on to learn more about the magic behind flower elixirs and how you can incorporate nature-based products into your everyday life for a more enriching and beautiful experience.

Can you tell us about how you grew up and what your journey to becoming a flower alchemist has been like?

My name is Katie. I’m a visionary and a flower freak—or, more formally, a Flower Alchemist, Entrepreneur + founder of LOTUSWEI, I moved around a lot as a kid, so I lived in a variety of places, but everywhere I played around trees, flowers and nature. In my mother’s gardens in Minneapolis it started with the huge, ruffly peonies, bright fuchsia flowers, dangling bleeding hearts, aromatic lily-of-the-valley flowers and floating water hyacinths. I ran through the alleyways with the neighbor kids sucking the nectar out of the tiny bulbs on the wild honeysuckle flowers. In Michigan, I picked blueberries, hunted morel mushrooms and marveled at the solitary lady slipper forest orchids and the carpets of white trillium flowers that looked like popcorn sprinkled on the forest floor. The deep forest waterfalls, massive sand dunes and expansive, crystal clear Great Lakes inspired me. Building tree forts was unsurpassed fun. In Wisconsin, I climbed cedar trees and spent hours walking through the forest as my refuge.

Nature connected me with a sense of something bigger than myself that I belonged to.

After graduating college and living in Europe for several years, I discovered flower remedies and studied with an expert from Spain. After that, I moved back to the U.S. and provided flower essence therapy consultations for over a decade.

What is flower alchemy and how did you discover it? How did you know you wanted to spend your life doing this?

Flower alchemy is collecting the transformative life force of flowers and bottling it up so that people can use it on a daily basis to accelerate personal growth. My flower essence teacher inspired me by saying, “If 3% of the world’s population were to use flower essences regularly, we would change the outcome of the future in a really positive way.” At that time I was living outside the country and when I came back to the U.S. I found that most people had never heard of flower essences. I had a one-on-one consultation practice for 10 years and saw the most incredible results in my clients. I then realized that I wanted everyone all over the world to have that opportunity.

What is your favorite flower and why? Do you have any flower recommendations for people who are new to flower alchemy?

The flower that’s closest to my heart is night blooming jasmine. It’s simple, unassuming, and yet in the moonlight, its fragrance is totally arresting and stops you in your tracks. Everyone needs some infinite love and fierce compassion. The combination flower blends are amazing for everyone! Whether it’s in the elixir (ingestible) or mist or anointing oil (with aromatherapy), each of the blends targets a state of mind that we all need more of: Joy Juice, Inner Peace, Infinite Love, Quiet Mind, Inspired Action, Radiant Energy. The combination formulas are multi-faceted and work very quickly.

What are easy ways to incorporate flowers and flower elixirs into everyday life?

Find out what flower can benefit you most right now: take a look at the flowers on our website, card deck, or Flowerevolution book (page 120) and see what flower you’re most attracted to. Start using the indicated flower elixir on a daily basis: take five drops orally, five times each day or put a full dropper into your water bottle each time you fill up. Typically, within 3-5 days you start to notice a difference in how you feel and think, with an exponential effect over time. Do you prefer aromatherapy over elixirs? Just dab on the anointing oils, serums, or mist yourself and you’ll get the same results.

What is Flowerlounge and what inspired you to start these events?

Originally, we came up with the flower lounge concept as a fun way to launch the book Flowerevolution. At the event, people would come up to us with tears in their eyes saying things like “that was exactly what I needed.” We realized we needed to keep having events to offer a place for people to just be and reconnect with what’s most meaningful to them. Before each event, we intuit the precise combination of flower essences that the city needs and perform a smoke offering in dedication for the city.

Also, studies show that group meditation lowers crime rates. We got curious about all of the lovely things that you can’t measure like harmony, happiness, connection and spreading a city wide ripple effect of positivity. We’ve had 17 flower lounges in 3 different countries and each one of them varies while allowing people to have an accelerated experience of what flower essences feel like. After the event, we collect the thousands of flowers that we use in mandalas and the next morning we do a flower offering to amplify the effects. Essentially, to quote the Dalai Lama, “World peace begins with inner peace.”
