How to Hack Your Weekend to Refresh and Inspire


Weekends: those blissful two days once spent doing homework and writing papers in college, and now spent in total freedom from your daily grind. Sometimes I’ll wake up on Monday morning and think, “I can’t wait for the weekend.” No joke. You’ve got your Monday, your Back to the Grind Tuesday, your Hump Day Wednesday, your “I’ve almost made it” Thursday, and then...TGIF. We race home from work, collapse on the couch, and revel in our newfound freedom.

If we’re not careful, though, we can get so caught up in not working that all of a sudden, it’s Sunday night and the weekend is gone just like that and the #SundayScaries set in. Here's how you can make the most of your weekend and still wake up on Monday feeling refreshed and ready to take on your week.

Make A Plan

I know, I know, weekends are supposed to be reprieves from our hectic schedules, but even a basic plan can help you get the most out of your weekend and strike the perfect balance. This way, all those things you keep saying you’d love to do “one day” will finally happen.

Throughout the week, as you think of things you want to do over the weekend, jot them down in your calendar. Dying to take an aerial yoga class? Look up weekend schedules, book a class, and pencil it in. Constantly making notes of fun restaurants to try? Make a date with a friend or yourself and set it in stone. Whether you’re eating, reading, or namastay-ing, if you make your ideas into a plan, they’re much more likely to happen.

Treat Yo Self

By the time Friday comes, I’m usually burned out from waking up early and working all day, so I need a little R&R. Usually, this involves my favorite food, a movie, and a nice quiet night in my apartment because that’s how I unwind, but it’s all up to you.

Take some time to focus on yourself — take a hot bath, read a book, go for a long run, journal, catch up with your best friend, whatever puts you completely at ease. Not only will you be giving yourself the love you deserve, but you’ll also have something to look forward to throughout the week, so no matter how long your work week is, your “me” time will be there waiting for you.

Have An Adventure

On the flip side, weekends are also the time to try something new. I’m guilty of this myself, but it can be far too easy to spend the majority of the weekend relaxing on the couch and actively not working that we wake up on Monday morning and realize that we didn’t really do anything at all over the weekend.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone needs that R&R, but it’s also important to get a little outside of your comfort zone over the weekend. Look up museums, art galleries, fun restaurants, parks, concerts, fitness classes, or whatever else your city or town has to offer and add just one or two things to your weekend plan. Dragging yourself out of bed when you don’t have to wake up early can be a struggle, but even a mini-adventure can help us clear and inspire our minds.

Get Ready

Finally, use your weekend to set yourself up for success the following week. I used to save everything for Sunday evenings, but I would often feel rushed and end up spending most of my Sunday on chores and cooking. I started breaking up all of the tasks I knew I needed to do for the following week and scattering them around the weekend and it’s been a total game-changer.

On Saturday evening, I’ll do laundry and clean my apartment, and also go grocery shopping. On Sundays, I make lunches and dinners for the week ahead and plan out my week in my Passion Planner. This way, I wake up on Monday with clean clothes, food in the fridge, and a game plan for the week (tasks I wouldn’t have time for during the week) and it makes my Monday just a little bit better.
