Makeup That Is Actually Healthy For You

For the most part, we tend to follow the same ol' beauty routine every morning. Unless, that is, you pressed snooze one too many times again and are forced to jump out of bed, brush your teeth, and throw on your gym clothes, pretending you dressed that way because you were going to the gym after class (we've all been there). But, on those special days when you do have time to wear makeup and real clothes, how often do you stop and think about whether the products on your face are actually healthy for you? Answer: Probably not often enough. In 2004, the Breast Cancer Fund launched the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics in order to increase awareness of the toxic chemicals that may be present in makeup and to remove these chemicals from products you put on your face and body everyday.

Why should you be aware?

According to the Breast Cancer Fund, "The cosmetics industry uses thousands of synthetic chemicals as ingredients, even those linked to cancer, infertility and birth defects." Their advice? Check the labels of all products before you use them to make sure they do not have any chemicals of concern.

What are safe products to use?

While the thought of putting toxic chemicals on your face is obviously very unsettling, don't fret! Over the past eleven years, more and more companies have vowed to leave toxic chemicals out of their products, creating healthy alternatives. Good news: you won't have to stop wearing your favorite makeup but you should start checking labels.

If you decide the chemicals in your makeup are too risky, here are some safer cosmetics companies to consider:

  • Afterglow Cosmetics
    • Founder and CEO of Afterglow Cosmetics, Kristin Adams offers an alternative beauty product that does not contain the chemicals seen in many others.
    • Guaranteed safer products for your skin and body!
  • Alba Botanica
    • For no more money than your other beauty products, Alba Botanica has everything from facial toners and lip glosses to shampoo and conditioner.
    • An added perk: Alba Botanica does not test its products on animals because it believes in cruelty-free standards.
  • Inika Cosmetics
    • Nothing screams safe quite like Inika Cosmetics' products with its Certified Organic, Cruelty-Free, Halal and Vegan Status cosmetic items.

Where can I learn more about the products I'm using?

Chances are your makeup bag is not stuffed with products from the above companies, but that does not mean you should dump it all and splurge on new products. Head to Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep page and search the products you use to find out their chemical risk!

I was definitely relieved by some of the results!
