Our September Power Word

I recently purchased a new computer. My MacBook Pro and I had a good run. Five years of late nights working on Spire, early mornings studying for exams, and many hours of Parks and Rec on Netflix. But after graduation, I had every intention of upgrading to something a little more 2017, you know? In typical fashion, I made a list of exactly what I needed.

It needed to be lighter. I wanted it to run efficiently and be able to handle the programs I used on a daily basis. And I wanted it to be pink because, well…there was no real rationalization with this one. I just really love pink. But if you’re making a big purchase, it should fit both your needs and your personality, right?

So the time came and my dad and I headed to the Apple store. Even though I went in knowing exactly what laptop I wanted, I still wasted a solid 30 minutes second guessing myself. In the end, my dad said, “Em, if you leave with any other laptop, you’ll regret it. You know this is the one you want.”

He was right.

When I brought it home, I set up all my systems. I transferred the right files. I downloaded the right programs. I even made myself a desktop background that would lift my spirits each time I turned on the computer.

When the final program was properly installed, a little window appeared that said I needed to refresh the page. I could click “Not Now” or “Refresh”.

I detest clicking that refresh button, I really do. There’s a chance you’ll lose what you’re doing all together. And it’s frankly just annoying and a total disruption. However, I knew that there was no better time than right now. I was starting with a fresh new computer and the longer I put it off, the larger the risk that I’ll lose something.

While the computer was reloading, that little refresh window got me thinking: maybe September is our refresh button.

Emerging from summer can sometimes feel like quite the exodus. The season has such a different lifestyle and all the relaxation and adventure have us balancing between extreme exhaustion and energizing inner peace. Regardless of where you fall on that post-summer spectrum, there is evidenced anticipation for autumn’s grand entrance.

Before we go full force into pumpkin spice and sweater season, our souls deserve a momentary pause. If we want to ask the fall to be this, that, and the other for us, we need to be specific. The only way to do so is to take inventory of our current status. What is weighing us down? What isn’t running properly? Is there something in our lives that simply doesn’t fit who we truly are?

You see where I’m going, right?

We all know what a smart purchase looks like. We do the research. We take stock of the current situation. We plan accordingly. Shouldn’t we do the same thing with our daily lives?

Schedule time to take inventory of your summer, your year, and (if you’re feeling ambitious) your life thus far. What investments do you need to make to create the life you want?

It doesn’t have to be a physical product. In fact, things probably shouldn’t be your point of focus. Instead of looking outward at all the things that would help you live better, look inward first. Do you need to shift your thoughts about yourself or the current state of your existence? What about your environments? Are they helping or hurting you? Is it time to finally take that leap you’ve been pondering for far too long?

Define exactly what those investments look like. Make a list if needed.

Then, commit. Commit to the truth in your ambitions. Commit to the work it will take to reach them. And commit to seeing your capabilities in a positive light. That’s necessary if you want to make this new season one filled with abundance, fulfillment, and joy.

Don’t make the same mistake I did. Once you’ve determined exactly what is best for you, don’t waste time second guessing. If you exit this forthcoming season of life with anything but your truest desires as your North Star, you’re going to regret it. As my dad said, you know what you want.

But there’s a caveat.

You simply can’t go from zero to hero. I mean, you can, but that’s not where longevity thrives and if you want to make a positive shift not just for the next few weeks but for seasons to come, you’re going to need to create a situation that will stand the test of time.

You need to define your systems for success. What organizational habits are required to stay on task? How will you adjust your time so you can invest in your newly declared ambitions? Do you need to create a completely new environment for yourself?

You need to transfer the right resources. What lessons have you already learned about yourself that could propel you forward this fall? Are there teachers in your life who you could call on for help or accountability? In the chaos of our daily existence, it is easy to forget many of the assets that are already in our corner, just waiting to help us do big, challenging things.

And, finally, you need to create a space for thriving because when you wholeheartedly want something, it’s only going to be more challenging the closer you get to achieving it.

Once we have gathered everything required to do the work, we need to click our internal refresh button. That’s how we dig our feet into the ground and confirm that, yes, we are ready for this new chapter.

Gather what you have learned about yourself this summer, define exactly how you plan to move forward, and then consciously refresh your spiritual programming. Start completely new. This time, you have the armor to fight for what you want like the warrior you are.

Don’t click the “Not Now” button. Commit to creating the life you want with every ounce of your being. Refresh not because you hate where you are. That’s not productive. Refresh because you know deep within your soul that you are meant to do big things. Refresh because you know you are capable of doing those big things.

As with all lifestyle shifts, refreshing is easier to do with soul sisters by your side. Don’t worry, we got you girl. We’ll be discussing this month’s Power Word (you’ve guessed it already, right?) all month long on our social platforms, our interviews, the articles we will publish, and our new online community (click here to join!).

So what is the September Power Word? Drum roll please…

refresh: to give new strength or energy to; reinvigorate

We have questions and we know you do, too. How can we refresh our scheduling practices? Can we refresh the way we look at our wellbeing? What ways can we refresh our approach to networking? We’ll explore these and many more this September in hopes that together, we can enter this new season of life with Wonder-Woman-level gusto and confidence.

There is no time like right now to click your refresh button. The longer you put it off, the larger the risk that you’ll lose out on being an even greater version of yourself. And we think you’re pretty great. So let’s refresh together, shall we?
